For decades, streaming and social media platforms have made music access easier and more immediate. At the same time, the shift toward frictionless, algorithm-driven discovery has changed how listeners engage with music. In optimizing for convenience and scale, some elements of the traditional album experience, such as sequencing, artwork, and contextual storytelling, have become less central.
KiTbetter, the South Korean company behind the KiTalbum hybrid physical-digital format, is opening a manufacturing facility in Los Angeles to better reach consumers in the U.S. The first KiTalbums produced in the U.S. are expected to reach retail and fans in early 2026.
According to news this week, "KiTbetter, the company reshaping physical music for the digital era, today announced a world first: the upgrade of a previously released physical album to Dolby Atmos® immersive audio. Duran Duran’s 2023 album Danse Macabre: De Luxe, originally issued in limited quantities as a KiTalbum in custom coffin-shaped packaging and described as “great ghoulish fun,” has now been upgraded to Dolby Atmos, giving fans a new way to experience the music with the album they already own. With limited quantities still available, Danse Macabre De Luxe continues to blur the line between the physical and digital, uniting art, technology, and timeless sound.

The first wax cylinder recordings were beginning to be manufactured for retail sale around 1889-1890 at the Edison Laboratories in West Orange, New Jersey, USA. During that same time frame, in Hanover, Germany, the Gramophone player was being developed by Emil Berliner with the premise of flat disc recordings as opposed to cylinders, and by the mid-1890s, 10-inch shellac discs were in full retail production.

Starting in April 2025, Earache will launch chart-eligible albums in collaboration with the Official Charts Company (OCC), becoming the first European label outside of K-pop to adopt the format at scale.
